Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, on Monday says Nigeria currently has two locally-produced COVID-19 vaccine candidates on the waiting list of clinical evaluation.
This is just as he noted that there are over 50 COVID-19 vaccine candidates either ready for use or presently awaiting trial globally.
The minister made the statement at the inauguration of National COVID-19 Vaccine Coordinating Committee in Abuja.
Posting the reports via the ministry’s official Twitter handle @Fmoh, Ehanire stated that Nigeria joined the race for production of a unique COVID-19 vaccine out of exigencies.
“Vaccines can save lives and there are currently over 50 serious COVID-19 vaccine candidates in or awaiting trial in the world, including two from Nigeria.
“Nigeria has also taken part in the race for vaccines, which one can say are quite unique vaccines, borne of exigencies of the time,” he said.
He stressed that the preparation for a national COVID-19 vaccination effort would require all the expert advice Nigeria can gather to actualise the high standard it has set for inoculation.
While harping on the membership of the National COVID-19 Vaccine Coordinating Committee, Ehanire noted that the committee would be made multi-sectoral to address the diverse aspects of vaccine acquisition, which spans across sectors.
The WHO Representative in Nigeria, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, has applauded the initiative.
Mulombo, who took to his Twitter handle @Wmulombo to also announce the inauguration of the COVID-19 Vaccines Coordinating Committee, said he was proud to be selected as a member.
“Privileged to be appointed as a member of the National COVID-19 Vaccines Coordination Committee and to witness its inauguration today.
“I applauded the initiative and welcome the multi-sectoral approach to vaccine security,” he tweeted.
