The Federal Government on Monday says it has almost completed an arrangement to have a central platform where the results of all COVID-19 tests done in every private laboratory can be posted.
Director-General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this on Monday at the weekly press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.
He explained that the measure was taken to curb the incessant reports of people securing fake COVID-19 test results from some unnamed private centres in the country.
“We are at the final stage of deploying a platform through which every private lab in the country will be reporting their results. And every single result [coming] out of Nigeria will be available for verification by any airline, embassy or any foreign country,” he said.
He recalled how the Nigerian media reported on the widespread issuance of fake COVID-19 test results, especially for travel purposes.
The NCDC director noted that it was becoming a challenge for the PTF, NCDC and all Nigerians.
“So, last week, with the FCT administration supporting us in an investigation, they ended up sealing one of those centres here in Abuja. This centre has been collecting funds from citizens and issuing fake result.
“In these centres, samples are collected from people, there is no evidence that a test is done. Results are provided and people go around with those results and continue with their travel,” he said.
Ihekweazu also appeal to Nigerians to be wary of being hoodwinked into taking such bait.
He further declared that all the authorised private testing labs where travel-related tests can be done has been published on the agency’s website, adding that there are 33 of them in Nigeria.
“It takes two to tango. If you choose to go to any other centre outside of these, you are part of the problem. So, citizens also have to take some forms of responsibility themselves in not patronising these other centres,” he warned.
