More than 80,000 people have died from COVID-19 in African countries since the outbreak of the viral infection, says the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to the Africa CDC in its latest update on Wednesday, the continent has now recorded 3,308,919 cases with 80,939 fatalities.
The African Union health agency notes that out of the over 3.3 million cases that had been recorded on the continent so far, 2,755,880 recoveries had been reported.
In the Africa CDC latest report, the Central African region has 82,598 cases; 1,557 deaths and 71,296 recoveries; while Cameroon has the highest figures with 28,010 cases 455 deaths and 26,861 recoveries.
East Africa, according to the report, recorded 346,757 cases; 6,546 deaths and 282,150 recoveries; with Ethiopia leading the region with 131,727 cases; 2,037 deaths and 116,392 recoveries.
In Northern Africa, there are now 1,034,931cases; 27,503 deaths and 867,298 recoveries; while Morocco has the highest figures of 461,390 cases; 8,011 deaths and 436,626 recoveries.
South Africa is still leading countries in the Southern African region with 1,356,716 cases; 38,288 deaths and 1,144,857 recoveries as the region recorded 1,556,153 cases ; 41,610 deaths and 1,285,760 recoveries.
Nigeria maintains the highest figures in the West African region with 113,305 cases; 1,464 deaths and 91,200 recoveries as the region now has 288,480 cases ; 3,723 deaths and 249,376 recoveries .
The African Union Chairperson and President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, had on January 14, 2021 announced that the African Union has secured a provisional 270 million COVID-19 vaccine doses from Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca for Africa through its COVID-19 African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team.
According to him, the African Export-Import Bank will facilitate payments by providing advance procurement commitment guarantees of up to US$2 billion to the manufacturers on behalf of the member states.
