The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control says COVID-19 vaccines must be approved by the agency before being administered to Nigerians.
NAFDAC also noted that the World Health Organisation’s approval was not enough for the use of any vaccine, except the regulatory agency certifies them safe for use.
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said this during a press briefing on Friday, adding that the WHO is there to give other regulatory agencies guidance and confidence as they carry out their duties.
“The WHO will say that unless the regulatory agency of a country approves a vaccine, it should not be used,” she added.
“WHO is not a regulatory agency that will approve and say use, they are there to guide and give regulatory agencies more confidence.
“If a product is already on the WHO emergency use listing, the regulatory agency will still look at the application.
“That doesn’t mean we just pass it like that, we will have to read it within the context of our environment.
“No vaccine or commodity can be used unless it passes through NAFDAC in Nigeria,” Adeyeye said.
She warned that no vaccine should be ordered by any company or corporation, stressing that genuine companies know they have to apply to the agency
The NAFDAC DG revealed that the agency was discussing with manufacturers of candidate COVID-19 vaccines concerning potential Emergency Use Authorisation, registration or licensing of their product, among others.
Recall that the Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, while assuring Nigerians about the effectiveness of the vaccines expected to arrive in the country at the end of the month, said they are working closely with NAFDAC, irrespective of other foreign certification of the vaccine.
“There must be due diligence. When the vaccines come, NAFDAC has to go through the assessment and processes to certify it good enough for Nigerians,” he assured.
