The United Nations has advocated inclusion, accessibility and sustainability for persons living with disability post COVID-19 world.

The global body says there are gains to be derived from integration of persons with disabilities in all aspects of national life, including political, social, economic and cultural life.

The UN made this known on Thursday [today] in commemoration of the International Day of Disabled Persons.

The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.

The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The main programme of the observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at the UN Headquarters in New York included the opening, panel discussions and cultural events.

Member states, civil society organisations and the private sector were also encouraged to organise their own events to celebrate the International Day to raise awareness and promote the rights and perspectives of persons with disabilities around the world.

“The IDPD is annually observed on 3 December to promote the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities and to take action for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development.

“This year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was commemorated throughout the week of 30 November to 4 December in conjunction with the 13th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” UN said.

The theme this year is ‘Building Back Better: Toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World.’

It will also focus on important steps taken by civil society and the private sector to “build back better” in a disability-inclusive manner.
